[330] Well-Being Index
According to the definition of WHO (1948)1, ‘Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.’ New Life Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association (New Life) believes that a flourishing life is accomplished by fulfilling our physical health (body), psychosocial (mind) and transcendental (spirit) needs.
The [330] Well-Being Index, developed by New Life and Professor Winnie Wing-sze MAK from the Department of Psychology of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, adopts the “Comprehensive Well-Being Scale” (CWBS) (Sham, Yeung, Mak & Powell, 2021). The term dayday330 comes from the homophony of the three Cantonese words “body” (3), “mind” (3), and “spirit” (0). This new measure of well-being correlates significantly with other established measures of well-being. They do not only include such health issues as psychological distress and physical symptoms, but also other important indices of well-being, virtues, and humanity such as compassionate love, universalism, self-transcendence and social-connectedness. The relevant research findings were published in the international academic journal “BMC Psychology” in 2021. Subsequent studies have been undertaken by New Life and Professor Patrick Wing-leung LEUNG, Director of Graduate Studies in Clinical Psychology of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. The CWBS is found to be additionally related to such human strengths as resilience, optimism, and meaning in life. Preliminary norms have been gathered with cutoffs identified for classifying individuals at different levels of mental well-being.
The [330] Well-Being Index is easy to use. After you fill out the questionnaire, you will be given a total score. This score is classified into one of the three categories: ≤ 65 (below average), 66-78 (average), and ≥ 79 (above average).
Purposes
• To allow the general public to have a preliminary self-assessment of one’s overall well-being, and to seek professional help for further examination when necessary
• To remind everyone to pay attention to their well-being and take good care of themselves
We recommend everyone:
• to monitor and take good care of their well-being across the physical, psychosocial, and spiritual dimensions,
• to adopt an optimistic outlook,
• to enhance one’s resilience against life challenges in order to flourish in life.
